Ulverston Town Council is the administrative body that looks after the various elected Councillors that represent you on a day-to-day basis. With eighteen Councillors on the Council, all of whom serve a period of four years, the organisation ensures that Ulverstonians are listened to both by South Lakeland District Council and Cumbria County Council.
Ulverston Town Council has eighteen Councillors elected for a period of four years. Councillors are elected from six wards in the town; these are Town Ward, Central Ward, North Ward, South Ward, East Ward and West Ward. These wards are also used to elect Councillors to South Lakeland District Council (SLDC).
Ulverston Town Council has six statutory Committees, covering its responsibilities; these are the Finance & Grants Committee, Allotments Committee, Emergency Committee, Charter Committee, Publicity Committee and Appreciation Certificate Selection Committee. Meetings of the full Council normally take place twice a month.
We are here to represent the people of Ulverston and we strongly listen to concerns and either deal with them ourselves or liaise with either South Lakeland District Council or Cumbria County Council. Additionally we have Councillors appointed as representatives on various outside bodies, working for the benefit of the local community.
Ulverston Town Council is currently aiming towards Quality Council Status which would visibly enhance and improve the role of the Town Council for the overall benefit of Ulverston. The Town Council was formerly a Borough Council prior to the local government reorganisation in 1974, after which most important responsibilities were transformed to South Lakeland District Council. Our main aim for attaining Quality Council Status is to regain some of these former responsibilities and broaden our service delivery to Ulverston.
It is both a great honour and a privilege to have been elected to serve as the Mayor of Ulverston. Whilst not originating from Ulverston, after living here for over 30 years I have a real pride in the town, set as it is in a beautiful part of England. I have pledged to work for the town and all its residents for the benefit of the people of Ulverston. We are extremely fortunate in having a forward looking community spirit together with a diversity of talents and expertise working alongside innovative business, and community orientated groups which makes Ulverston such a wonderful town. The many visitors to Ulverston remark on the friendly and helpful welcome which they receive from the people; this is more evident to those who visit Ulverston during the many festivals which take place throughout the year. There is a tremendous spirit and sense of pride in Ulverston and hope for the future which is shared across the community. I will strive during my Mayoral year to build on the partnership working to attain a greater level of services being managed at a local level.
